Topic: GER 575 ?Literature and Migration? This course will focus on the fundamental reconfiguration of our understanding of literature and culture in a framework of migration. We will trace the changes that come from rethinking literature, which has traditionally been considered in a national framework, from a transnational vantage point. What histories suddenly appear together on the same page that had been heretofore considered separate national histories? What can we recognize about the circulation and transformation of literary forms and literary traditions from this altered perspective? We will explore these questions primarily through literary texts that tell stories of migration to Germany from the 1970s to the present and attempt to identify the literary and cultural specificity of this corpus. Authors may include Aras ren, Sten Nadolny, Emine Sevgi zdamar, Yoko Tawada, Zafer Senocak, Feridun Zaimoglu, W.G. Sebald, and Dimitr Dinev. We will also consider key theoretical writings on nation, migration, and globalization by scholars such as Benedict Anderson, Arjun Appadurai, and Leslie Adelson. All primary readings will be in German, but discussion may be in English. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like further information (yy47@illinois.edu).
