Credit: 4 hours.
Equilibrium thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and kinetic theory of gases. A unified treatment is used in that the principles of heat and thermodynamics are discussed along with statistical postulates and the microscopic approach of introductory quantum mechanics. Designed primarily for advanced undergraduates.
Credit is not given for both PHYS 427 and any of ME 404, CHEM 442, CHEM 444, MSE 500. Prerequisite: Two 400-level courses in physics.
