Topic: Black Girlhood This course is designed to introduce students to Black Girls? Studies. Girls? Studies is a sub-field in the discipline of Gender and Women?s Studies. Importantly, Black feminists and womanists thinkers have always remembered and valued the experiences of Black girls. In this course, we will meet at the intersection of girls? studies, Black feminist thought, and womanism to understand how social, political, cultural, and economic systems construct ?Black girlhood? and inform the lived experiences of Black girls. This course is inherently interdisciplinary. Students must be willing and able to share/question personal experiences, work in the community, perform, and critically read and analyze academic texts, poetry, films, novels, and music. In this course students will have the opportunity to work with Black girls in Central Illinois. In this way, we will extend our learning beyond the university for the purpose of learning what it means to identify as a Black girl growing up in Champaign, Urbana, and Rantoul, IL. This unique opportunity will give urgency to the significance of Black Girls? Studies as legitimate academic inquiry as well as provide you with the opportunity to make a positive difference in your own life.
