Topic: Feminist Media Studies This course explores the theories, debates, and methods of feminist analyses of gender, sexuality and ethnicity in various media contexts, in general, those of film and television programs, advertising campaigns, music videos, and/or internet sites. In considering the different intellectual concerns that have shaped discussions and issues within feminist media studies, this term students will view one film each week that portrays the social or personal dilemmas faced by men or and/women. The films will all be box-office hits of their day, beginning in the golden age of Hollywood and ending with recent selections. In analyzing the films and the critical readings that assess them, students will be working with the critical assumption that the media function as social constructions and reflections of personal and cultural knowledge. The course serves as an introduction to feminist media studies and affords a way to contemplate the media-inflected formation of personal, sexual, racial, cultural and national identity. Strict attendance policy; assigned viewings; weekly viewings, readings and quizzes?not sure yet about a final exam
