NOTE: Class begins 9/15; class also meets 10/2 and 10/23. In this advanced graduate seminar we will examine both methodological and political issues surrounding the evidence-based and data-driven decision making movements in education, health care, and other social services. We will look briefly at the origins of evidence-based practice in clinical medicine and examine its migration to education and the social service fields; we will discuss the controversies surrounding the development and use of hierarchies of research designs and grades of evidence; we will discuss differences in evidence-based practice and evidence-based policy; we will examine the idea of data-driven decision making in business and industry and the migration of this idea to education as well as models for this kind of decision making.
