Topic: A Branded Nation: The Culture and Meaning of Brands in Everyday Life Course Description. This course will explore the economic and social landscape that has facilitated the transition of the brand from commodity to icon. Students will explore the development of brand cultures and assess the tactics used by marketers in developing brand experiences that enhance the emotional connections consumers have with brands. The course will offer students the opportunity to analyze brands as culture while developing insights as to how a brand becomes a cult brand and consumers use these brands for emotional reasons more so than rational reasons. This will include case studies of brands such as Nike, Apple, Harley Davidson, Star Trek, Ikea and Coca-Cola. Brand managers will be invited to speak to the class. As a final project, students will create a multi-media presentation of a brand culture they have developed. For more information, go to: http://www.media.illinois.edu/faculty/slater.html.
