Examinations of the political, economic, ecological, and cultural trade-offs between the use and the preservation of the environment, with particular emphasis on the preservation of land and water resources in national parks, forests, and other reserved lands.

Will taught in new online format; students need not be on campus to take this course. Following this course, students are eligible for PS 199. Politics of Wildlife and Wilderness in the Northern Rockies, 2 credits course. PS 199 is an experiential learning course is built around a field trip of 8-10 days to Montana and the Greater Yellowstone Area. We will have guest lectures and class sessions at Montana State University and the Property and the Environment Research Center (Bozeman) and at the University of Montana and the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute (Missoula). I will also try to arrange a visit to Ted Turner?s Flying D Ranch, a for-profit ranch managed for environmental sustainability and protection of the endangered westslope cutthroat trout. The course concludes with problems of wildlife and wilderness management in Yellowstone National Park. PS 199 is optional and would occur at or near the end of PS 225.
