Credit: 4 hours.

Introduces selected counseling approaches for substance use disorders. Begins with an overview of the causes of substance use disorders, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Focuses on treatment theories and techniques applied to counseling substance abusers. Selected theories include 12 Step approaches, cognitive and behavioral theories, family systems theory, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing. Special attention is devoted to apply substance abuse treatment models with diverse populations.

Prerequisite: SOCW 500 (may be taken concurrently).
