Credit: 3 hours.

Provides an introduction to the characterization and use of biomaterials in medical applications. Presents concepts of biocompatibility in terms of structure and properties of materials and interactions between materials and proteins, cells, and tissue. Addresses issues related to the design of biomaterials. Gives the opportunity to design biomaterials to meet specific medical needs. Lectures are augmented with clinical presentations. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent registration in both MCB 252 and MSE 403 (or CHEM 232).
