Credit: 4 hours.

The theory of electron microscopy techniques and their practice in relationship to materials structure characterization and microanalysis. Topics include physics of electron microscopes, kinematic and dynamic electron diffraction theory, defect image contrast, high resolution electron microscopy, electron probe formation, STEM and inelastic scattering and microanalysis. Microscope experience is included through laboratory demonstrations and project assignments.

Prerequisite: MSE 405 and MSE 481.
