TOPIC: French Around the World. French is spoken on every continent. This course is an introduction to its dialects around the world in light of the modern history of the French overseas expansion in North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific (17th-20th centuries). The course is taught in French and requires no previous coursework in linguistics. Students, individually or in small groups, will select one francophone region or country to focus on as their mini-research project during the semester. Midterm and final essay.
