Introduction to Sustainable Design is a three-credit course consisting of lecture, discussion, seminar and related exercises. The course will explore the role of the industrial designer in relation to the Introduction to Sustainable Design is a three-credit course consisting of lecture, discussion, seminar and related exercises. The course will explore the role of the industrial designer in relation to the environmental and ecological demands of the 21st Century with the goal of preparing design students to address product design and development from a broader, holistic perspective. Course content will explore the environmental origins of sustainability, theory of sustainability and specific environmentally-responsive design methodologies and topics including industrial ecology, dematerialization, design for disassembly, and design for recyclability, local/global production, sustainable packaging and life-cycle assessment methods. This course provides specific environmentally-responsive tools, principles and methodologies in preparation for professional application. Designing sustainable products and environments is increasingly important as means by which to bring our consumption in line with the ecological balance of our planet.
