Section Info:
Topic: "The Psychology of Advertising" Students enrolled in this course will begin by learning about psychology as a science, how psychological (and marketing) research is conducted, and how we come to develop verifiable knowledge about the human mind. We will study attitudes, influence techniques, conformity, and persuasion, paying particular attention to topics such as the unconscious mind, and subliminal persuasion. We will also learn about how the self-concept and individual goals can have an impact on advertising receptivity (is it better to position a product with unrealistically attractive models, or with more average, flawed models?). Finally, we will consider the global marketplace by examining cross-cultural psychology and the use of different advertising appeals in different cultures. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. Students who enroll in more than one may be dropped from the additional Discovery courses. For course descriptions, see the Discovery Program booklet.
