Basic principles of social science research and importance for social work practice: overview of research principles including the stages of a research project, design of research; quantitative and qualitative methodologies, design of questionnaires, methods of data collection and preparation of reports. Introduction to various research designs such as the survey, program evaluation, single subject design, quasi-experiments, and experimental design. Enrollment preference given to students in the MSW program.

Academic Outreach restrictions and assessments apply, see http://www.outreach.uiuc.edu. This online course section, for students in the Springfield cohort, starts August 26 and ends December 9. The Elluminate online conferencing system will be used for synchronous (real-time) class sessions and there will also be 3 face-to-face class sessions held on the University of Illinois at Springfield campus in room 150 of the Visual and Performing Arts Building (VPA). Both the Elluminate online sessions and site-based classes will be held on Wednesdays evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The initial face-to-face meeting will occur on the first day of class, August 26, and the other two site-based meetings are tentatively scheduled for October 14 and November 18.
