Examines the roles of domestic and international factors, modes of transition, institutional choices and economic reforms in the transition from authoritarian rule. Comparisons are made of cases in Southern and Eastern Europe, Latin America, East Asia, the former Soviet Union, and others.

Prerequisite: Completion of PS 540 or PS 541 is recommended.
