The subject of this seminar will be the planning and creation of an exhibit in Chicago that will open in April 2010. Through the display of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century illustrated books from a private collection in Chicago, we will explore the use of water in early modern Europe. Specifically, we will focus on water systems in the urban environment in the 1600s and 1700s. Through the examination of fountains, rivers, aqueducts, sewers, and other water features, we will explore the history of architecture, cities, landscape, and technology. Part of the final product of the course will be an exhibition catalogue that we will create together which will be professionally published. You may contact the instructor for more details about this course (hhminor@illinois.edu). [Elective course for Graduate Certificate in Special Collections.]
