Serving Child in Schools/Comm
Section Info:
Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors campuswide. Meets with CI 260BTW and LIS 590BTW. This community engagement course is designed for students interested in working with children, and/or parenthood. The focus for this course is tutoring and mentoring children (elementary through high school). A minimum of two hours per week of approved community service related to children is a requirement of the course. Placements with schools will be made through the course instructor. Class content focuses on relating to children, motivating and engaging children in learning, community institutions and agencies serving children, and social issues affecting the lives of American children today. Students interested in serving at the elementary school level will be placed at B. T. Washington School in Champaign and should be able to tutor at least one of the following times: Tue., Wed., and Th. from 3:00-5:00 pm. Secondary placements will vary according to student availability and district needs. This course meets with LIS 390BTW and LIS 590BTW.
