Course Title: "Dream, Do or Die: Black Ambition and Popular Culture". Course Description: What is the attitude of African Americans toward ambition--striving to succeed against the odds? how do we expain the rise of Barack Obama? What does his historic victory say about the aspirations of an entire community? How do we transmit values of ambition across generations of African Americans? Students in this class will consider these and many other similar questions in discussions based on text, magazine and comic book readings, film and television screenings, and reviews of plays and sound recordings. The goal is to develop an appreciation of the African American drive to achieve in the modern world, as well as a critical appraisal of the media treatment of Black ambition.
