Title: Black & Asian American Literature and History Meets with AAS 299, Sect CY. Course description: What is the relationship between how African and Asian Americans are thought of as "workers" and how they are thought of as disparate racial minorities? How do our ideas about class and race shape our understanding of what it means to be ? or more specifically, who can be "an American worker?" In this class, we will tackle these broad questions by thinking about how specific categories such as "black," "Asian," and "worker" have been constituted in and through various texts in particular historical moments in American culture. Our analysis will focus on how historical and literary representations have shaped and challenged our understanding of "black workers" and "Asian workers" as categories of identity, and how we might think about them as ongoing negotiations with power in the space of Afro-Asia in the United States. Meets with: AAS 299 (CRN 54493), ENG 274 (CRN 41001), and HIST 199 (CRN 41773).
