Introduction to Optimization. Fundamental principles of mathematical optimization theory will be introduced and applied to example problems, primarily having to do with aircraft and spacecraft, but also to "real world" problems such as planning a day's errands, planning a retirement portfolio, or catching a fly ball. Topics include the calculus of variations, game theory, and genetic algorithms. Students will research and numerically model a problem of their choice as the course capstone project. Prerequisite: Math 220 or 221 or equivalent (or concurrent registration in these courses). http://www.ae.uiuc.edu/people/faculty/conway.html. First year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
