Topic: The Body Articulated: The class will research a diverse group of artist and a broad array of contrivances, both historical and contemporary, that extend or mediate our physical presence in the world. We will explore the intimate and transformative relationship that have with the body and how the dream of these contrivances extend & free the body and 'speak' to a larger world/community. The structure of assignments will consist of initial concept staging, research, presentation, and execution. The Body Articulated is not media specific � an emphasis on the expressive power of materials that are laden with meaning and their ability to enhance the intent of the work will be an integral part of concept formation. Topic: Mixed Media and Collage Studio. This studio course will explore the techniques and ideas behind the use of mixed media, photomontage, and collage. The class will trace the development of collage from its origins in the Dada movement of the early 1920s to the present. The class will view and discuss the work of contemporary artists who utilize collage in their processes. A fast-paced class with a laboratory atmosphere will be grounded by weekly projects that encourage students to experiment and subvert the studio assignments into their own visual language. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Course meets in Carriage House Conference Room, The Phillips Collection. Class will not meet on March 21. Graduate Section.
