MUSIC AND MATH, 3 hours. An opportunity for students to learn how to model mathematically some aspects of music. The musical expression of mathematical ideas (and vice versa) will help students to understand some of those ideas in a new way. At the same time, the mathematical analysis will enrich the students' encounter with music. Topics of the course will include sound waves, chords and scales, instruments, aspects of musical notation, symmetry, and The Wurfspiel: musical dice games by Mozart and others, music and artificial intelligence, and David Cope's Experiments in Musical Intelligence (EMI). First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
