Special Instructions: Undergraduate section. Graduates must enroll in the ARTH 541. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. This seminar will consider how ideas of geography�and of places imagined as physical spaces as well as political spheres�have been transformed in the last century. Indeed, asking not only what, but where, was Modernism, we will investigate questions of site-specificity, identity, globalization, and cultural production and assimilation. Topics will additionally comprise public art, community-based art, and landscape art, among others. Restriction(s): Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.

Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Following an introduction to Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, this coursewill examine art made in the last twenty-five years. We will explore topicsincluding the emergence of new media alongside the cyclical so-called deathand return of painting; the economics of the art market and the increasing ubiquity of art fairs; the politics of representation and the NEA culture wars; and the efflorescence of the aesthetic in recent years.

Graduate section. This course is about practices of collecting things from China, Japan, and Korea. What was the attraction that these things held historically inside and outside East Asia? How did the presence of these collections transform the artistic landscape in the places they were held? Besides considering the historical circumstances of collecting East Asia, we shall make an ethnographic study of local collections of East Asian art in Urbana and Champaign. This part of the course will involve the production of video documentaries by students in the course. The documentaries will be exhibited on campus at a conference on Collecting East Asia planned for Spring 2008. Neither previous knowledge of East Asian art is required nor expertise in the production of a video. Contact Professor Burkus-Chasson with questions. Facilities charge 75.00 dollars.
