(EALC 431) Examination of Japanese literature from a variety of genres and historical periods designed to prepare advanced students for independent work in literary criticism and analysis. Texts in the vernacular are read and discussed from a variety of critical perspectives. Students produce a term paper based on current scholarship in the field of Japanese literary studies.

May be repeated in same or subsequent terms as topics vary to a maximum of 12 hours. Prerequisite: A reading knowledge of Japanese.
