Section Title:
Music of Ireland
Section Info:
Topic: "MUSIC OF IRELAND: FROM WESTERLY BLASKET TO WORLD STAGE." Students in this class explore and contextualize Irish music across traditional, popular, and global contexts. Readings and discussions examine how Irish music spreads through diaspora and globalization; how “Irishness” is represented in film, media, and popular music; and how tradition, authenticity, and cultural exchange influence musical practices today. Irish music is approached as a dynamic art form shaped by local creativity and global circulation. Hands-on activities include learning traditional tunes on the D whistle, learning an Irish-language song, and dancing a set. This course is open to all campus majors. The ability to read music is not expected. Students may purchase a whistle independently or from the instructor during the first week of class ($10). Cross-listed with MUS 418A. Meets in Summer S2B.
