Global Focused Adv Documentary
Section Info:
Advanced Globally Focused Transmedia Storytelling - Ghana. Advanced storytelling over several media through immersive training, cross-cultural journalism and strategic communications focused on Ghana's Kayayei (young female head porters). Students will investigate the "pull" factors of the Kayayei migration from North to South. Students learn advanced technical skills training with ethical international practices, preparing them to tell complex global stories with cultural competency. Travel to Ghana will occur March 12-21, 2026. A program fee will be assessed for students in this course. Students must have applied to be admitted into this course.

This course provides specialized knowledge about the historical roots and evolution of science journalism, offering an essential foundation to practitioners. From early twentieth century publishers who saw the popularization of science knowledge as critical to democracy, to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and beyond, the course critically examines pathbreakers, icons, and classic works pivotal to the field’s development. Science journalism’s historical impact, including important regulatory reforms that changed business and the economy, and benefitted the consuming public, are also studied. Communicating Science with Augmented Reality: This course provides an overview of augmented reality (AR) technology, what makes it important, how it has been used in science communication, and the social-psychological/educational impacts of AR. Students will gain hands-on experience with science-related AR, conceptualize their own AR science experiences, learn how to find/use/create 3D models for science communication, and create an AR science experience using AR software.
