Preservation Museum Artifacts
Section Info:
This course meets at Spurlock Museum, located at 600 S. Gregory St, Urbana, room 208 CCG Gallery. There is a $100 Facilities fee and a $75 Class Materials fee for this course. Lecture and hands-on group-based labs introduce preservation, documentation, and maintenance of the physical integrity of museum collections. The course begins with agents that deteriorate and how to mitigate their damage. Students will be introduced to physical properties of inorganic, organic, composite, and textile materials. Practical solutions of packing, shipping, storage methods, collections hazards, safety and emergency planning will be taught. In addition, you will gain practical museum experience, and understand standard practices of collection and decision-making as they apply at the Spurlock Museum. Course activities are practical, hands-on, and regularly require physical movement - personal mobility and fine motor skills will be beneficial for participants. This course is quick paced, focusing on one pertinent topic per week, and includes weekly assignments, a midterm, and a final presentation.
