Section Title:
Grassroots Computing
Section Info:
Explore what can be learned from examining the relations between computing and grassroots actions around the globe. We will discuss and think critically about the politics of modern information technologies and practices, how they travel to diverse contexts, and how they are resisted, contested and reshaped by people, communities, or practices that rehearse alternatives to state, corporate and elite control. We will explore theories of power relevant to computing in order to frame different understandings of grassroots computing. For each framing, we will examine case studies from a variety of disciplines that will guide us in reflecting on our own positioning with respect to these contexts. We will ask what we can learn from grassroots computing about our own (computing) worlds and practices of global solidarity in a world of widespread, uneven, and power-laden computing.
