Section Title:
Topics in LGBT Lit and Film
Section Info:
SP26 ENGL 325 - Topics in LGBT Lit and Film - Curtis Dickerson - Gay Villains - Carmen Maria Machado writes in her memoir that she “cannot help but love fictional queer villains…They're always by far the most interesting characters on the screen.” In this section of ENGL 325, we’ll examine the trope of the gay villain in 20th and 21st century texts, from classic Disney films and reality television competitions to novels by Arturo Islas, Torrey Peters, and James Purdy. We’ll also position these texts in conversation with contemporary queer scholarship about the origins of these negative representations and their reappropriation by queer communities.
