Oaths & Laws in Ancient Greece - What were the ties that bound agreements between people in antiquity? This course examines this question through a survey of select, guided readings from Greek literature and inscriptions to chart how the notion of trust developed among ancient peoples and states. This includes the consecration of sacred oaths, the formation of contracts, the codification laws within civic courts, and the negotiation of treaties. In doing so, we will appreciate the nuance of Greek syntax to express agreement and how it mirrors changes in Greek society, law, religion, and politics
