GER 205: Germany and Europe: Europe in Trouble? This course reads Europe’s postwar history as a series of crises, illuminating broader European dynamics that have shaped Europe as we know it today. It may seem like Europe is in trouble all the time, and yet the European Union has proven to be more relevant and resilient than ever. The central theme concerns Europe’s "struggle for identity" in relation to other global powers that underlies many of the controversies surrounding Europe’s global role today. Particular attention will be paid to debates on migration, religion, language, and the long-term effects of World War II. Course material includes Tony Judt’s Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945, in-class screenings of several films, and Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Satisfies the Gen Ed requirements for "Historical and Philosophical Perspectives" and "Western/Comparative Cultures". No prerequisites or prior knowledge necessary; taught IN ENGLISH.GER 205:
