Section Info:
Francophone Belgium: History, Literature, Culture—An exploration of the history and culture of Europe’s second largest francophone country and its capital Brussels, home to the European Union. A close neighbor of France, Belgium is also fundamentally different: a constitutional monarchy, officially multilingual, and heavily decentralized. At the crossroads of France, England, and Germany, Belgium’s unique and turbulent history, including the colonization of the Congo, has also produced a rich and varied literary and visual culture which we will encounter in this course: from Émile Verhaeren, René Magritte, and David van Reybrouck to Hergé, Chantal Akerman, Stromae, and Angèle.
