Section Info:
SP26 EALC / ENGL / CWL 276 - Asian Film Genres - Qian He - Where Truth Lies - Through a genre lens, this course examines the entangled worlds of film and justice across global Asian and East Asian screens. We examine how genres—from police procedurals and courtroom dramas to political thrillers, spy films, social horror, true-crime documentaries, sci-fi hybrids, experimental animation, surveillance cinema, and amateur video—recast what counts as justice or injustice amid shifting social, cultural, and media conditions. Taking the “post-truth” moment as provocation, we ask: If truth is dead, who—or what—killed it? How might Asian cinema stage its demise or enable its return? At the center is the trial as a media problem: not only a legal proceeding, but a form, a visual-spatial trope, and an aesthetic system for producing and contesting truth.
