Radio Astronomy
Section Info:
ASTR 496 RAD: Radio Astronomy This lab course will cover the details of modern radio astronomy, focusing on interferometric science and skills. We will use archival observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. Using real data, we will learn how to make image maps and data cubes that can be used to do astronomy (including moment maps). We will match research paper results on topics of interest to the students. We will acquire the necessary skills to jump into radio astronomy research or prepare for signal processing. This course will count as a laboratory course for astrophysics majors. Prerequisites: ASTR 210, ASTR 310; You will also need a computer with a working conda installation for much of the coursework.
