Section Title:
Memory and Architecture
Section Info:
"Architecture and Memory." How do groups physically locate their shared identity and collective memory? How does architecture help us remember (or forget) our triumphant or traumatic pasts and project our desires for the future? This seminar examines the relationship between memory, architecture, history, and place to understand how buildings, monumental arts, and the designed environment contain, convey, obscure, and, at times, alter the collective memory of human experiences. We will pursue a number of historical and contemporary case studies, addressing such topics as the destruction or preservation of cultural heritage, iconographies of remembrance in the designed environment, the construction of memorials to trauma, racial, gender, and social identities, and memory in the urban form. Theoretical/conceptual texts will help us understand architecture in relationship to the field of memory studies, though the focus of the course is on the built environment itself. This term, cultural heritage and monuments in times of war and upheaval will be a particular focus.

One hour of additional credit is available by arrangement with the instructor. This course focuses on the social, cultural, and political meanings of space, and issues of equity and justice in the built environment. Taking an interdisciplinary approach and adopting theories from anthropology, sociology, landscape architecture, cultural geography, philosophy, and urban studies, we will examine concepts of space, place, and the meaning of place from multiple perspectives. Aiming to provide diverse, underrepresented, and global perspectives, this course scrutinizes issues of gender, race, identity, equity, justice, power, and diversity and their impacts on the built environment, and invites students to develop analytical skills and their own understandings of these issues.
