Integrates principles of building construction into the architectural design process. Students integrate materiality, fabrication, constructability, and detailing into their projects. Explorations increase in both program and context complexity. The investigations include both technical and theoretical aspects of design.

6 undergraduate hours. 6 graduate hours. Prerequisite: ARCH 473. Restricted to architectural studies majors.

IMPORTANT DETAILS; PLEASE READ CLOSELY. This section is restricted to juniors in the BSAS program. The Architecture in Barcelona and Chicago (ABC) Studio focuses on urbanism and/or housing (affordable or simply collective housing). It is a travel studio running for six weeks in June and July. It begins with two weeks in Barcelona followed by four weeks in Chicago and features leading faculty from the University of Illinois as well as numerous guests and site visits. For 2026, the approximate dates are June 09-24 in Barcelona and June 25-July 30 in Chicago.
