Spring 2026 Part of Term 1

Part of Term 1
Jan 20-May 6

Credit: 3 hours.

An anthropological approach is used to explore human health by integrating perspectives from biological and medical anthropology, as well as human biology. By the end of the course, students will be able to conceptualize health holistically, encompassing wellness and well-being. They will learn how to define, measure, and incorporate embodiment theory using genetic, epigenetic, and human biological methods. Students will also gain a strong understanding of the biological mechanisms through which environmental factors influence health outcomes and contribute to health disparities.

Prerequisite: ANTH 230 strongly recommended, or consent of instructor.

Anthropology of Care: What does it mean to care for others? Through a series of medical ethnographies, this semester we will examine care as an intimate practice that is profoundly social and political. Over the past two decades, care has become an important topic in social, political and marketing discourse. Medical anthropologists have turned to care to understand larger issues such as kinship, solidarities, humanitarianism and state control. They have also used care as a prism to examine institutionalization, colonialism, racism and ableism in healthcare. Rather than taking claims of care at face value and accept all care practices as benevolent, we will seek to understand their inner logic and examine their ambivalence, potential violence and collateral effects.
