Section Title:
Talking Politics
Section Info:
This course explores how language, identity, and culture are politicized at different scales, from individuals and their communities to institutions and societies. We analyze how discourse is used to reinforce and challenge ideologies that perpetuate systems of inequality based on social characteristics including race, gender, sexuality, class, and (dis)ability. We examine how everyday interaction, media representation, and governmental discourse construct social realities, as well as institutional contexts in which ideologies become politicized practice, such as education, healthcare, and the justice system.
