Topics in Immersive & Interactive Theatre

Credit: 3 OR 4 hours.

Explores the evolving landscape of immersive and interactive theatre, examining how these forms engage audiences, break traditional theatrical conventions, and create dynamic, participatory experiences. Each offering of the course will focus on a topic within immersive and interactive performance, allowing students to engage with theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated in separate terms up to 12 undergraduate or 16 graduate hours, if topics vary.

Students will explore how technologies can support and expand audience participation in immersive and interactive theatre. This course examines when and why technology should be integrated into an experience, the types of tools that have used to facilitate interaction, and how technological systems can shape the relationship between audiences, performers, environment, and story. Students will consider both current practices and future possibilities.
