- This course introduces students to the diverse histories, cultures, and contemporary issues of the region commonly referred to as the "Middle East". We begin by examining how the region has been defined, then explore its contributions to human civilization alongside modern social, political, cultural, and environmental developments and challenges. Through multidisciplinary materials and engagement with lived perspectives from scholars, creators, and community members, students will critically analyze representations of the region, reflect on how their perceptions evolve, and consider how knowledge of the Middle East can be applied within their own fields and future careers. This course meets twice per week, with the option of virtual learning on Tuesdays. Students will also participate in experiential learning activities that strengthen cross cultural communication, global awareness, and applied analytical skills — competencies increasingly valued across sectors such as education, public service, international development, media, community engagement, and STEM fields where global collaboration and cultural literacy are essential. These experiences support students’ broader workforce development by helping them connect regional knowledge to real world professional contexts. Please email the instructor with any questions.
