Advanced Rhetoric and Composition

Credit: 3 hours.

Research and analyze audience, purpose, cultural context, and conventions of different writing situations and use that knowledge to compose projects in different genres and modalities. Particular sections will contain a theme, such as writing in the disciplines, the rhetoric of podcasts, or the use of generative AI. Coursework includes invention, drafting, and revision activities throughout the course in a collaborative learning environment.

Prerequisite: Completion of campus Composition I general education requirement.

Section Info: FA26 RHET 233 - Advanced Rhetoric and Composition - Shawn Gilmore - We will study graphic novels and comics to explore genre, rhetorical situation, and argument. We will examine how comics combine text and graphics to shape information by looking at memoir, nonfiction, and other ways artists and creators use comics storytelling techniques to comment on the world around us. You will create your own nonfiction comics using the tools we study in the classroom. Throughout the class, assignments will be created by hand and work in doodles, drawings, creative positioning of text, etc. No artistic skills or deep experience with graphic novels required. All you need is some critical thinking, creativity, and an open mind towards what an Advanced Composition class can be! Restriction(s): Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
