Medicine and the Sacred: Healing Traditions Across Cultures

Credit: 3 hours.

Explores the intersections of medicine, religion, and healing traditions across cultures. It examines Chinese, Indian, Greco-Islamic, and Western systems of medicine, highlighting their philosophical foundations, therapeutic practices, and ethical dimensions. Topics include etiology and pathology, humoral and energetic theories, divine healers and authority, pharmacology, mental health, and spirituality. Students engage in comparative analysis and conduct research on a chosen healing modality in conversation with modern biomedicine.

Credit is not given toward graduation for: REL 494: Medicine and the Sacred and REL 380.
