Section Title:
Adva Thai I - Thai Soft Power
Section Info:
This course aims to emphasize the Thai language in all communicative realms to give students a better understanding of the Thai language and comparative culture as students learn to use the language in discussions with native speakers. These communicative skills will be utilized through the examination of short and long stories on various topics: Thai daily life, people, traditions, arts, beliefs, and values of different regions and reigns. By the end of this course students will be able to read academic passages, understand video presentations, predict content, identify main ideas and conclusions, produce written and oral summaries, answer questions about listening passages, and express critical thoughts in Thai. Students will give clear presentations with correct pronunciation to a small group of Thai speakers. Students will also write short and long essays about Thai living, people, traditions, arts, beliefs, values in different regions, and reigns by comparing their knowledge and experience with other cultures. Course Requirements: Because mastery of the Thai language depends on practice of it, evaluation will be based on attendance, participation, and homework in which students will practice what we learn in class. There will also be quizzes, two presentation assignments, and a final exam to check for understanding. Intended Audience: ASIANLAN 461 is for any student interested in advancing their knowledge of Thai language and culture. Students should have completed ASIANLAN 262 or the equivalent. Students who have not completed ASIANLAN 262, please contact the instructor for a placement test. This section is offered through the BTAA Course Share Program and will be taught via video-conferencing/Zoom/online by the University of Michigan.
