- Section Title:
- Mafia at the Movies
- Section Info:
- Contrary to their frequent portrayal in cinema and literature, the Italian mafias are neither exotic social phenomena nor remnants of archaic societies. Rather, they constitute complex economic and cultural systems deeply intertwined with the development of capitalism. This course examines that historical relationship through both well-known and lesser-known Italian and Italian American films that illuminate the distinctive features of Italian criminal organizations, from The Godfather to The Professor to Gomorrah. In doing so, the course also explores the economic, biopolitical, and environmental questions raised by the evolving forms of Italian organized crime, from Cosa Nostra to the Neapolitan Camorra.
