Section Title:
Lang. & Soc. of the Two Koreas
Section Info:
This course offers an introduction and contrastive analysis of the language and society of the two Koreas—the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea)—with a heavier emphasis on North Korea. It examines the growing divide between North and South Korea over the past 80 years in language, society, and culture. While mass media coverage of North Korea often focuses on political and human rights issues, this course foregrounds linguistic issues and everyday life through scholarly articles, book chapters, web-based resources, news reports, propaganda materials, and documentaries. Although the course includes linguistic elements of interest to intermediate and advanced Korean language students, it is fully accessible to students without Korean language proficiency. There are no prerequisites. The course does not require prior coursework in political science, Korean history, sociology, or North Korea studies, though it assumes student interest in these areas. This section is offered through the BTAA Course Share Program and will be taught via video-conferencing/Zoom/online by the University of Minnesota.
