- Students must register for both the "DA2" in-person Lecture and an "DD" in-person discussion." A continuation of CHEM 232, this course focuses on advanced reaction mechanisms and the chemistry of complex organic molecules. Students will engage with practical applications in organic synthesis throughout the course. Topics include the reactions of conjugated compounds under kinetic and thermodynamic conditions, the exploration of pericyclic reactions, and the role of heteroatoms in aromaticity, as well as electrophilic aromatic substitution. The course also covers reactions involving carbonyl compounds, amines, and carboxylic acid derivatives. Additionally, students will be introduced to biochemically relevant molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Materials Required Textbook: Organic Chemistry by Janice Gorzynski Smith 7th Edition. Online Homework: ALEXS. Day1Access course materials cost $129.41.
