Undergraduate Seminar in Art History

Credit: 3 hours.

Seminar offering students practical experience in research methods in Art History. Focuses on a specialized theme of the professor's choice, and incorporates extensive reading in a specific field of Art History and the completion of a substantial research paper.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated if topics vary.

How is the perception of landscape related to its representation in the visual and literary arts? After all, what is it that we see in landscape? These are some of the questions that we shall address as we consider the various shapes that landscape assumes in Chinese painting, garden structures, poetry, and film. The seminar widely ranges across time and space, and considers divergent approaches to the question “what is landscape.” Some seats are reserved for Art History majors. What are the aesthetics of the end times and of the futures that extend beyond? What forms and conventions recur in envisioning apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic worlds? Whose world is centered in their framing, and what strategies have artists devised to bend or escape from those frames? In this seminar, we will consider these questions, among others, by examining episodes in modern and contemporary art and visual culture. Some seats are reserved for Art History majors.
