Section Title:
African Atlantic Visual Cultur
Section Info:
African Atlantic Visual Cultures. Africa’s visual cultures and material legacies transcend the continent’s physical borders. In examining these legacies, we will emphasize the resilience and struggles of enslaved Africans and their descendants in (re)creating some of the main cultural and religious features of the Americas. Rather than discussing African and Black diaspora cultures as separate fields, we will emphasize mutual trans-Atlantic influences in music, art, fashion/textiles, architecture, food, and political identities from the fifteenth century to the present.
