Examines principles and methods that characterize identifiable approaches used in community organization practice at neighborhood, community, state, and other levels. This course is an in-depth study of how citizens can organize. Questions discussed include: What institutions aid communities in their organizing and self-improvement efforts? What circumstances encourage the erosion of civil society, civic involvement, and community institutions? What role should the social worker and the human service or social service agency play in organizing communities?

Prerequisite: SOCW 400.
