Section Info:
This introductory-level survey covers at least six of Shakespeare’s plays alongside notable film versions or, indeed, wholesale reinventions of those plays. We’ll likely cover The Taming of the Shrew; Romeo and Juliet; The Merchant of Venice; Macbeth; Othello; and The Tempest. Films include Franco Zeffirelli’s The Taming of the Shrew (1976); Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet (1996); Michael Radford’s The Merchant of Venice; Roman Polanski’s Macbeth (1971); Billy Morrissette’s Scotland, PA (2001); Oliver Parker’s Othello (1995); and Derek Jarman’s The Tempest (1979). Expect also to see a range of short clips from a variety of filmed live performances. In our weekly lectures, I will provide an overview of the play under consideration, concentrating especially on key moments that suggest multiple possibilities for performance. I assume neither expertise in Shakespeare nor in the vocabulary of film criticism; consider the course an entryway to both disciplines.
